In a connected world where we are end users of various software solutions and consumers of hardware devices, it’s possible to draw parallels between two utilities that are so closely related yet seem so far apart in the global supply chain — Aluminum & Data.
Alcoa is one of the worlds largest producer of Aluminum with mining facilities spread across the globe. Historically, two separate inventors discovered aluminum around the same time(1886 & 1887) in two different countries (USA & France). Over time the aluminum industry has boomed with various use cases in both high technology and day to day necessities like car rims, soda cans, foil, tea kettles, staples etc… Without aluminum — Amazon servers, Microsoft surface pros, Apple smartphones & IBM connected devices do not exist. Without key hardware devices, software services like Google, Netflix, DoorDash etc.. cannot be utilized properly.
Mining aluminum helps create the physical, while mining data helps improve the digital. Data, the modern utility.
Today’s strategies incorporate some level of #digitaltransformation across a wide range of industries, leading to more and more data that is constantly being accumulated and learned. There are exponentially more ‘data mining’ companies than aluminum mining companies. Mining data is cascading future use cases that will positively impact our personal day to day objectives. Similar to how aluminum has impacted our world today.
